Spectator Sports in Las Vegas

I have to admit that I don't watch a lot of spectator sports. I had to go out and find this information, as I really didn't know much about sports in Las Vegas.

What I found was, although Las Vegas doesn't have any NFL or MLB teams, that doesn't mean there is nothing to watch. In fact, my research indicated there might be there might be a greater variety of spectator sports in Las Vegas than in most cities.

Not to mention that most casino sports books show just about every major sporting event in the world on some of the finest big screens anywhere, and they bring the beer right to your seat. Of course, they expect you have a little wager now and then.

The usual team sports

Baseball fans have a choice of the Las Vegas 51's, the AAA team for the Dodgers, or the UNLV Rebels.

Hockey fans can root for the Wranglers hockey team.

UNLV (University of Nevada - Las Vegas) fields a full line up of teams in many sports, including football, basketball, soccer and many more.

Just to round things out, we also have the Las Vegas Gladiators arena football team.

Other sports

For racing fans, there is Nascar Busch Series and Nextel Cup Series Diamler Chrysler 400. Las Vegas Motor Speedway also hosts drag racing, sprint cars, and dirt track racing.

Don't let me forget Supercross and Monster Trucks, both of which seem to be very popular. In fact, from what I saw, it seems, if it has wheels, you can find racing here.

I was reminded recently, as I was walking through a hotel that was filled with cowboy hats and large belt buckles, that the National Finals Rodeo is a regular visitor, and the BigHorn Rodeo will be here later this year (2008).

Those are two of the many special sports events that take place in Las Vegas every year. Others include a PGA tournament, the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and Las Vegas Terrible's Cup, The Tennis Channel Open, Olympic Trials, and Boxing.

I'm sure I haven't covered everything by a long shot, but I hope this abbreviated list will help get you started finding your favorite competition.

Enjoy.
